Modece’s Team

Modece Architects moved to Stowmarket in 2019, where they embarked on the restoration of the Old Fox Yard. Their design ethos centred on creatively preserving, integrating, and showcasing its historical significance through sustainable construction techniques and materials. Modece’s office in Unit 4 of the Old Fox Yard is a prime demonstration of this vision where they revealed the 16th century timber frame and vaulted ceiling of the former stables. Only natural materials were used throughout to create a well-insulated and healthy space to work from. The works ultimately restored the Old Fox Yard to its former glory where it now stands as a hub of niche businesses in Stowmarket’s town centre.

Modece’s restorative vision can also be seen elsewhere in Stowmarket with their recent and ongoing work at the Food Museum. In autumn 2022, the Food Museum secured over £1,000,000 in MEND Funding to enhance, expand, and refurbish buildings integral to the museum's heritage. Collaborating with Modece, the restoration efforts have been progressing steadily, with the new Home Close toilet block nearly finished. Future works plan to start enhancements to significant buildings such as the Collection Store, Bone Building, and Abbot's Hall.

Modece is distinguished through their innovative exploration of sustainable materials, with a focus on pioneering research into the use of hemp as a construction material. Although they are in the process of refining techniques for using whole, unprocessed hemp stalks, they have successfully executed multiple projects featuring hemp-lime walls. These endeavours result in breathable, well-insulated, and healthy living spaces, all while boasting a carbon-negative footprint.
