ReStow CIC was commissioned to create a series of murals for the atrium of the new Stowmarket Innovation Gateway, in collaboration with local artist Catalina Carvajal. The artworks celebrate Stowmarket's rich history while looking towards its future, reflecting how research, creativity, and innovation at the new centre can help shape the town's next chapter.

Past Mural
The murals were developed through extensive research by ReStow CIC into Stowmarket's history of innovation and growth. From its agricultural roots to its industrial expansion, the project explores the town's evolution and considers the opportunities that lie ahead.
The boards are based on the layout of Stowmarket’s streets, reflecting how the town has developed over time. Historically, Ipswich Street was the primary thoroughfare through the town, connecting Stowmarket with Ipswich and Bury. As a result, much of the town’s activity, trade, and development naturally centred around this route.

Over time, Stowmarket has evolved, with buildings changing use, being adapted, or replaced as the needs of the town have changed. Despite these physical changes, the community has remained at the heart of Stowmarket’s identity. This continued growth and changing landscape is also reflected in the development of the railway and the introduction of new road connections, strengthening the town’s links with the surrounding area.

The MIX
Past Mural
Positioned opposite one another within the atrium, the murals invite visitors to discover connections between the town's past, present, and future. They trace the transformation of familiar landmarks, from Abbotts Hall becoming the Food Museum to the Corn Exchange evolving into the John Peel Centre, illustrating how places continue to adapt and take on new significance.
